Access to CBD Products Leads to Reduction in Opioid Prescriptions
A statistical study from our American colleagues provides important
evidence that CBD products reduce opioid prescription
rates.
The
pages of the specialized electronic publication of national cannabis growers
have more than once published materials indicating that in economically
developed countries of the world non-narcotic cannabinoids are actively used to
treat various types of addictions. The attention of our dear readers and
listeners has already been focused on the fact that Cannabinoid medicine aimed at reducing pain is more effective
than pharmacological drugs designed to treat pain with opioids , the side effects of which are a much
higher level of addiction (dependence) as well as a host of negative effects.
That is why the statistical study conducted by our colleagues from the USA,
demonstrating a decrease in the prescription of opioids in the administrative-territorial
units of the country that regulated the possibilities for the legal use of CBD products, is extremely
interesting and one that provides another argument in favor of regulating the
market for products in Ukraine, which contain include plant cannabidiol.
The
analysis entitled “CBD as a panacea? The impact of cannabidiol legalization on
prescription opioids was conducted by economists from Wofford College in South
Carolina and California State University at Bakersfield. The researchers looked
at US subdivisions that have cannabidiol ( CBD ) laws and analyzed nearly
10 years of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
) to find evidence of how CBD affects opioid prescription rates.
According
to the authors of the analysis, “the ability to legally purchase cannabinoid
products leads to a reduction in the number of opioid prescriptions by
6.6–8.1%.” Additionally, those conducting the analysis make it clear that not
only has the use of prescription cannabidiol led to a reduction in opioid
prescriptions, but legal access to CBD products also plays a significant role
in the significant reduction in opioid use. Specifically, the report found that
stores selling cannabidiol helped reduce opioid prescriptions by 3.5% just two
years after regulating the legal sale of CBD products. Additionally, the study notes
that “the fastest growing segment of the CBD market is the over-the-counter use of
cannabidiol-infused products.”
The
overall finding of the study was that “states with laws regulating the use of
cannabidiol have lower opioid prescribing rates than jurisdictions that do not
regulate the legal use of CBD products . ”
