With the rapid growth of the global market for cannabis, European breeders have only in recent years drawn attention to the need to select plants containing increased amounts of non-drug-free cannabinoids. Since the content of CBD is directly proportional to THC in the plant, and in Europe the limit of tetrahydrocannabinol is limited to 0.2%, the breeding base itself has a relatively low percentage of cannabidiol in its composition. In addition, the increased attention to the development of varieties with the maximum amount of seeds and fibre until recently did not imply the task of increasing and stabilizing a significant amount of cannabidiol in the new varieties. That is, European breeders had to fight against stereotypes for a long time and, most importantly, to prepare the basis for the creation of therapeutic varieties of technical hemp. 

It is precisely for this reason that the European seed market contains seeds with a high CBD content, produced by marijuana seed cans, which themselves are confusing to the consumer and have no therapeutic effect for the reasons mentioned on the above Round Table. It should also be borne in mind that this seed material is sold mainly as collectibles and that such varieties have not undergone any registration procedure in the relevant EU regulations. That is, there is no guarantee how much exactly cannabidiola is in the widely advertised cannabis varieties of marijuana, and among other things, as either the quality or stability of the seed.

Varieties created in the USA and Canada

While several high-technology cannabis varieties have been developed in the economically developed countries of North America, which are practically in line with European THC limits, American and Canadian breeders do not consider the registration of these varieties in the EU to be economically viable (the registration procedure itself is a long and expensive process that requires significant investment by North American breeders). Among other things, in Canada and the United States, breeders make excellent money by bringing to the market varieties of cannabis that are more appropriate to grow in greenhouses/enclosed spaces, and they are not yet interested in creating hybrids grown on thousands of hectares of land.  

In other words, investing in the development and/or registration of technical hemp varieties with high CBD content that meet EU certification standards and market needs is considered unacceptable to North American breeders, despite the profits currently made from the sale of finished products containing CBD.

Technical hemp varieties with a therapeutic focus have been developed by our country's breeders, which demonstrate their extreme effectiveness in the treatment of neurodegenerative, oncological and other serious diseases, including chronic diseases. For our country, the main problem of the impossibility to use therapeutic properties is not the lack of varieties inherent in Europe, but rather the regulatory framework that does not allow the use of the therapeutic properties of technical hemp in Ukraine.

How they profit from the market rush

In order to remain competitive in the fast-growing cannabis market, Swiss, American, Canadian and Chinese hemp growers are looking for uncertified, but with maximum yield, CBD seeds, usually getting them from marijuana breeders or seed banks that take off their responsibility for what they sell. Most of them sell unstabilized hybrids on the market, or do not understand plants that do not have a therapeutic effect at all.

Structural weaknesses reduce Europe's potential contribution to the global revival of cannabis production, and Europe's business position in global cannabis production is being lost.
