Hemp as an alternative to meat

heading_title

The recognition of hemp as a sustainable protein crop is a clear sign that officials in various EU countries have not only gotten rid of the paradigm that sees the plant as a drug. Representatives of EU member states already recognize the importance of the plant, at a minimum, in ensuring food security in their countries .

The European Parliament has been working for a long time to develop supply chains for the production of plant proteins as alternatives to meat. This also includes hemp, which is why the European Parliament has asked that the hemp plant be recognized as a “sustainable protein crop.”

The European Parliament approved the European Protein Strategy, which emphasizes the need diversifying protein sources, minimizing dependence on imports and decisively focusing on cleaner and longer-term sustainable options. In particular, MEPs voted in favor of the European Protein Strategy by 305 votes to 109, with 69 abstaining.

The text, among other things, clearly states that the European Union “recognizes the great potential of hemp as a sustainable protein crop and emphasizes the need to harmonize its regulation at EU level to facilitate the cultivation of the plant and its processing into food and feed.”

A comment specialists of the Association “Ukrainian Industrial Hemp”

I would like to especially emphasize that the recognition of hemp as a sustainable protein crop is a clear sign that officials in various EU countries have not only gotten rid of the paradigm according to which the plant is perceived as a drug. Representatives of EU member states already recognize the importance of the plant, at a minimum, in ensuring food security in their countries.
