What is the difference between terpenes and flavonoids
Although flavonoids and terpenes have beneficial effects on the human body and can have a therapeutic effect on it in a similar way, they are not always found in the same varieties of hemp plants, and besides, there are many more terpenes than flavonoids.
There are therapeutically active compounds in hemp that give the plant its smell, color and taste. However, it must be understood that these compounds are divided into flavonoids and terpenes. And if earlier on the pages of the specialized electronic edition of national cannabis growers described “Terpenes in hemp”, and also focused on their medicinal properties, then flavonoids were mentioned in passing and the healing properties of these therapeutically active hemp ingredients were not disclosed in any way. During the training of students of the "Hemp University" it is constantly emphasized that the therapeutic use of the "ensemble" effect is many times more effective than the use of a specific cannabis ingredient for medical purposes. That is why information about flavonoids is extremely interesting and useful to us, which, having a significant therapeutic potential, is rarely taken into account during the use of hemp leaves and inflorescences as a healing agent.
What are flavonoids ?
Flavonoids are one of the most understudied elements of the hemp plant. This compound is responsible for the plant's pigmentation, which produces dark green to deep purple flowers. They also affect the aroma and taste of cannabis leaves and buds. It should be noted separately that flavonoids closely interact with terpenes and cannabinoids, providing a powerful therapeutic effect on the human body. There are only about 20 different flavonoids in the hemp plant, but they are all unique to each particular plant. Flavonoids are rich in antioxidants, so they help regulate cell activity and actively protect the human body from toxins.
Cannflavin A is a flavonoid that is responsible for reducing inflammation in the body. Ongoing research demonstrates that its pain-relieving properties are stronger than taking aspirin.
Cannflavin B is extremely similar in characteristics to Cannflavin A and has almost the same anti-inflammatory properties.
Cannflavin C is a flavonoid with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties similar to Cannflavin A and B.
Kaempferol is a flavonoid with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has been shown to help with depression and may also significantly reduce the risk of heart disease.
Quercetin is one of the most effective hemp flavonoids as it has antidepressant, antioxidant, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
Orientin is a universal flavonoid that has multiple therapeutic effects on the human body. It has antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.
Silmarin - has antioxidant properties. It is effectively used in therapy aimed at the prevention and treatment of cancer.
What are terpenes ?
Terpenes are similar to flavonoids in that they also control the smell and taste of the hemp plant. However, there are many more terpenes than flavonoids. There are about 100 different terpenes in the hemp plant, and they are unique to each plant species.
Terpenes have a huge impact on the serotonin and dopamine systems in the body, which is why some strains of cannabis are relaxing while others are stimulating. The therapeutic properties of terpenes have already been described by the editors in the materials “Hemp Terpenes (Part 1)” and “Hemp Terpenes (Part 2)”.
