The country legalized cannabis for medical use in 2017 and lifted the ban on plant cultivation and production in 2018. Greece, which is gradually emerging from the financial crisis of the decade, issued its first two licences to private cannabis producers in November 2018, with government officials considering 12 more similar applications for cultivation and processing of cannabisa.

The countries of Southern Europe, where there is plenty of sun and mild winters, such as Greece, Portugal and Cyprus, are ideal for growing cannabis, and can eventually become serious competitors to all countries with the rapidly growing hemp industry of the continent. Cheap labour and access to the EU and Middle East markets also make Greece an ideal country for foreign cannabis companies to expand into nearby markets from this region.

According to Greek government officials, the first few licenses issued at the end of 2018 for legal cultivation and processing of cannabis will allow the industry to make an initial investment of $ 185 million in the next three years, the volume of financial resources in various areas of the country's hemp industry may be about € 1 billion. In particular, according to James Eix, managing partner of the American company Devcann; which has already invested 12 million in the cultivation and export of medical cannabis, as well as the possibilities of using it in Greece, the country can already be called European California by its hemp potential.
