In the fight against Covid-19, cytokine storms are one of the deadliest factors doctors fight. In some cases, coronavirus disease leads to excessive inflammation, swelling, pain and loss of function of internal organs. The defeat of Covid-19 can lead to the fact that the immune system is so disorganized that it begins to kill the body's own cells, instead of fighting the infection. In severe cases of this kind, the development of the disease can lead to death.

Over the past few months, researchers around the world have been investigating whether hemp or individual plant compounds can help fight the above ailment by reducing inflammation or blocking the effects of viral diseases in the body. Studies by Israeli scientists show that certain compounds in cannabis help fight cytokine storms, which are also a consequence of the Covid-19 disease.

The published results of research conducted in Israel combine a number of experiments suggesting that individual cannabis ingredients could radically change the situation in the fight against coronavirus. Research material demonstrates that individual terpenes work much better than cannabidiol extracts and may be more effective than traditional treatments. Experimental reports show that the combination of cannabidiol and terpenes is three times more effective in suppressing cytokine activity than dexamethasone (a corticosteroid that is effective against COVID-19-induced cytokine storms according to recent research).

The above study on the efficacy of terpenes is being carried out by two Israeli research companies - Eybna (specializing in the manufacture of terpene-based drugs) and CannaSoul Analytics. The research is being led by Professor David Meiry, Ph.D., who specializes in the use of cannabis to treat diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Preliminary results from ongoing experiments indicate that terpenes can effectively fight pneumonia triggered by COVID-19, and the synergy of terpenes and cannabidiol is superior to dexamethasone in its effect.

According to CEO Eybna, most of the drugs based on the therapeutic properties of cannabis contain only one active ingredient in the plant. The composition developed in the course of experiments contains 30 different elements of the plant, which, by reinforcing the action of each other, create incredible therapeutic effects, including those associated with the treatment of coronavirus.

Various hemp compounds with therapeutic properties were investigated in the course of experiments in order to understand how they affect the activity of cytokines. The results obtained somewhat shocked Israeli scientists. The terpene complex is not only able to inhibit cytokine activity (with better results at higher doses), but also outperforms the use of cannabidiol and dexamethasone. In particular, cannabidiol alone inhibited about 75% of cytokines on average, while terpene alone inhibited about 80%, suggesting that the terpene blend would be more effective than cannabidiol used to reduce inflammation. The maximum results were obtained with the combination of cannabidiol and a terpene composition that was able to inhibit about 90% of the cytokines tested. In comparison, dexamethasone is only able to inhibit about 30% of cytokines. Based on the above, the researchers suggest that the combination of cannabidiol and terpenes could be twice as effective as the currently recommended treatment.
