Using space monitoring to control cannabis crops

heading_title

The EU is using satellite technology to develop a robust system to measure carbon removal from industrial hemp cultivation. In the next few years, uniform standards will be introduced that will partially offset the cost of industrial hemp cultivation for our European colleagues through carbon credits.

Company " Tao Climate , which is an innovator in carbon removal measurement, reporting and verification technologies and verification , MRV) joined the European Space Agency (ESA) Business program at Space Week 2024 Incubation Centre (BIC) Ireland . This collaboration aims to use space technology to ensure the sustainability of industrial hemp crops. As part of the joint collaboration, ” Tao Climate integrates cutting-edge satellite imaging technology developed by ESA into its MRV platform to monitor hemp crop growth.

This type of initiative will enable precise monitoring of various parameters of hemp cultivation, providing critical data to ensure optimal growing conditions and maximise carbon sequestration potential. It will thus address one of the most pressing issues in the carbon sequestration market: verification. The EU is using satellite technology to develop a reliable system to determine the amount of carbon sequestration in industrial hemp cultivation. This innovation will not only increase transparency in the carbon market, but will also encourage sustainable farming practices on a global scale.

CEO of Tao Climate ” Gary Byrnes expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We see a future at the intersection of space technology and sustainability. Using the European Space Agency’s satellite imaging capabilities, our company will be able to track hemp growth with unprecedented accuracy, solve the problem of verifying carbon credits and lay the foundations for a more sustainable future. This partnership is a testament to the transformative power of space technology in the fight against the climate crisis.”

Peter Finnegan , ESA Space manager Solutions Ireland , says: "We are delighted to welcome " Tao Climate ” in the ESA BIC Ireland network . The company’s innovative use of space technology to address global challenges such as carbon sequestration through the cultivation of industrial hemp exemplifies the types of pioneering technologies we aim to support.”

Commentary from experts of the Association “Ukrainian Industrial Hemp”

Industrial hemp is a versatile agricultural crop known for its carbon absorption capabilities. A number of economically developed countries have developed programs to partially offset the cost of growing industrial hemp through carbon credits. A joint initiative of the European Space Agency and a private company aims to improve methods for monitoring industrial hemp crops in order to use the data obtained during the collaboration for the use of carbon credits.

Such an initiative may indicate that in the next few years uniform standards will be introduced, according to which our colleagues from Europe will be partially compensated for the cost of cultivating industrial hemp through carbon credits. At a minimum, specialized public organizations of our country need to inform state structures of Ukraine about initiatives of this kind. This needs to be done in order to look for similar ways of partial compensation of the cost of industrial crops of technical hemp by the national producer. Otherwise, EU hemp growers will get another advantage in the global hemp market compared to similar Ukrainian structures.
