Exploring the possibilities of using hemp in aquaculture
The project, which aims to study as well as the use of cannabis as feed for aquaculture, received a grant from the USDA. Born as a consequence of the many food safety concerns consumers currently face with seafood grown with feed rich in various additives. The aim of the research of specialists of "Central State University" is to analyze, as well as study the possibilities of using hemp as feed for aquaculture. In particular, the establishment of hemp as a sustainable food ingredient for the production of fish with high nutritional value; the creation of diversity in raw materials used in aquaculture; expanding national markets for the use of hemp raw materials, including for the creation of fish products related to the aquaculture system, with a subsequent increase in the sustainability of production.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has funded a cannabis aquaculture project. Funding was announced by USDA Executive Officer Tom Vilsack. The above project will be part of an investment of over $ 146 million in advanced sustainable agricultural research aimed at creating a strong, resilient and climate-friendly food and agriculture system.
According to Mr. Vilsack, “USDA is addressing pressing agricultural challenges across the country. Critical issues such as food insecurity, drought resilience, animal disease prevention, etc. require investment to help solve them. By implementing projects of this kind, we do our best to remain the leaders in the global market, thanks to investments in science and research, as well as intelligent solutions necessary to preserve the climate and increase the profitability, sustainability of producers, creating new opportunities for generating income and increasing welfare. that remains in rural communities ”.

Commentary of the specialists of the Association "Ukrainian technical hemp"
In our country, there is minimal experience in the use of various hemp components (grain, fibrous part, leaves and inflorescences), as well as their derivatives in aquaculture. The attraction of resources from the state for a detailed study of the possibilities of using the plant for aquaculture in the United States can be a positive experience for a similar kind of projects already being implemented in Ukraine.
