The effectiveness of cannabidiol for the treatment of severe forms of epilepsy
British pharmaceutical company GW Pharmaceuticals has completed phase III clinical trial of the drug based on purified cannabidiol in the treatment of severe forms of epilepsy.
During "Epidioleks" experimental drug studies (Epidiolex) took part in 172 patients aged 2-55 years diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. All participants were divided into groups, 86 people received "Epidioleks" (20 mg / kg / day), and 86 people - placebo. In addition, patients continued to comply with the standard antiepileptic therapy.
According to published data, the use of an experimental drug within 14 weeks helped to reduce the frequency of attacks by 44%, while this figure was 22% in the placebo group. The study authors also noted that the drug was well tolerated.
The active substance of an experimental drug is a purified cannabidiol, while the medicine does not controlled under the Single Convention on drugs tetrahydrocannabinol. Drug production GW Pharmaceuticals is considered by FDA Office of Food and Drug Administration Department of Health and Human Services US as a potential drug for the treatment of first-line drugs effective in the treatment of childhood epilepsy.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome - a rare and severe form of epilepsy that begins in childhood. This type of epilepsy is difficult to treat. Attacks with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome usually begins at the age of 2 - 6 years. In children with this form of the disease is marked difficulty in learning and developmental delay (later they start to sit, crawl, walk), which can be mild to severe. Observed frequent seizures and other manifestations of epilepsy, with impaired thinking, developmental delay and behavioral disorders. Often, these children need help with their daily activities.
