Cannabis treatment of chronic wounds
Intact skin is hydrophilic, and the wound is lipophilic. Torn tissue can absorb cannabinoids, which are also lipophilic, so the healing process is much accelerated by the use of drug-free cannabinoids.
On the pages of the profile electronic publication of Ukrainian hemp breeders, the therapeutic properties of hemp, including drug-free cannabinoids for creating cosmetic or pharmacological preparations, have been repeatedly described. This publication describes a study by a Canadian physician who has been studying the therapeutic possibilities of drug-free cannabinoids for the treatment of various types of skin lesions for a long time.
Chronic wounds in large numbers affect the skin of older people, seriously disrupting their health and quality of life. Aging reduces our ability to heal, and conditions like diabetes, vascular diseases, cancer, and surgical procedures put older people at risk of developing chronic wounds. Despite the well-known difficulty in treating such ailments, a new experimental treatment based on cannabinoids promises to significantly improve the condition for millions of people suffering from chronic wounds.
Multi-billion dollar market
According to the American Professional Association for Wound Care, non-healing wounds affect about 15% of Medicare recipients, and the cost of their treatment can reach $ 30 billion. The anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoids encourage research into potential treatments for the full spectrum of disease states, one of which is the treatment of chronic wound healing.
The results of a recently completed study showed that an experimental topical drug based on cannabinoids achieved an unusually high level of success in the treatment of chronic wounds - up to 90% effectiveness. Dr. Vincent Maida, a specialist in palliative medicine at the University of Toronto, took part in an open study of thirty patients who tested his hemp products for topical use. Twenty-seven participants in the experiment showed complete closure of the wound, which in some cases could not be cured for more than ten years.
Cannabinoids for healing
Dr. Maida explores cannabinoids for the treatment of pain, as well as their effect on wound healing for more than 20 years. During graduate school at the School of Public Health. Dalla Lana at the University of Toronto, he faced a preclinical study demonstrating the effectiveness of cannabinoids for healing wounds. According to Dr. Maid, “At the initial stage, when I recommended cannabinoid therapy to my patients, I was considered a heretic.” But when Canada expanded the definition of cannabis to include extracts as well as dried flowers, Dr. Maida developed and patented his own formulations, and began to recruit patients for research. Now he holds patents for topical cannabis-based medicines for the treatment of wounds and various skin diseases.
Dr. Maida runs a penetrating wound clinic in the Toronto area, where she receives patients who have the most severe wounds in southern Ontario for treatment. As Mr. Maida explains, “All the mistakes of the other doctors come to me. I get the worst possible patient condition for work. The use of drug-free cannabinoids during treatment gives amazing results. ” Therefore, Mr. Maida demonstrates to the general public how to heal severe lacerations / stab wounds in patients of any age, including the elderly during various kinds of practical exercises, as well as seminars.
The mechanism of the therapeutic effect of drug-free cannabinoids
Chronic inflammation underlies a non-healing wound. Typically, a wound progresses through an ordered cascade of phases from the time of the initial injury to complete healing. As Dr. Maida explains, non-healing wounds “get stuck” in the inflammatory stage. “Already published enough preclinical evidence that cannabinoids and other elements of hemp have anti-inflammatory properties. Cannabinoid-based drugs “reload” (remove) the wound from this chronic inflammatory stage. Another thing that made me realize that the plant will be successfully used to treat various types of wounds. The fact that intact skin is hydrophilic and the wound is lipophilic. Torn tissue can absorb cannabinoids, which are also lipophilic, so the healing process is much accelerated by the use of drug-free cannabinoids. ” This is one of the most important observations during the experiments - the very molecules that are anti-inflammatory in the composition of hemp can be rapidly absorbed in the wound bed. Thus, through the endocannabinoid system, which is also present in the skin, cannabinoids introduced from the outside enable effective treatment / healing of wounds and pain relief for patients suffering from this disease.
Commentary of the Ukrainian Technical Hemp Association
It is on such principles of a favorable therapeutic effect on the skin of the human body that the national line of cosmetic products “Konoplyana oliya” was created, as well as a new line of professional cosmetics launched on the market using organomineral compounds and multicomponent organometallic substances based on natural humic acids.
