The management of SUNY Morrisville public school (New York) initiated the development of a program to teach minors to various disciplines in the field of cannabis. The program will focus on studying the characteristics of the cultivation of hemp, as well as acquaintance with various businesses accompanying the rapidly growing hemp industry. The main objective of the project is to provide students with information based on which they can make a decision about their desire to devote their further detail to growing, processing or selling products made using hemp raw materials. According to Associate Professor of Agricultural Sciences, Jennifer Gilbert Jenkins, “We hope to“ launch ”a training program for modern hemp breeding as early as the fall semester of 2019. Given the fact that the school specializes in the teaching of agricultural science, as well as technical subjects, our main task is to train skilled workers using their skills in the course of work on specifically taken specialties. Observing how intensively hemp breeding is developing in the USA and realizing that there is a catastrophic shortage of specialists in the industry, we have initiated the relevant discipline for teaching ”.

Based on existing school programs in the field of agricultural engineering, science and gardening, the program will be specifically designed to teach specifically taken specialties that the market urgently needs.

Another SUNY Morrisville staff member, Howard Rice, says that “The goal of this course is to introduce young people into a modern cannabis course to understand the processes that occur in the plant. The industry should not be lovers who “have been growing marijuana in the basement for 10 years.” Jobs in the fast-growing sector of hemp business should be filled with professionals who will begin their training, including in our school. ”

For training students in various methods of growing hemp, on the territory of SUNY Morrisville provides for the cultivation of technical varieties of hemp. Given the adoption of changes to the relevant legislative framework at the end of 2018, this initiative is absolutely legitimate. According to Mr. Rice, “Technical hemp does not have a psychoactive effect, so we can use it in practical exercises. In fact, on these plants, it will be possible to work out certain activity algorithms that will similarly work on cannabis, used for both medical and recreational purposes.

SUNY Morrisville management hopes that this program (currently under development) will become a magnet for students who want to learn more about modern cannabis and the possibility of building a business in this field of business. To achieve this goal, the faculty of the school plans to use all its experience with cannabis integrating it with the knowledge of housekeeping, as well as a set of information on how to scale this experience into small farms specializing in the cultivation and processing of cannabis.
