Hemp Biochar Production

heading_title

“ Biochar ,” made from hemp biomass processed at the company’s facility or in farmers’ fields, is produced through a process called pyrolysis, which heats organic material at high temperatures with extremely low oxygen levels. The method captures carbon and creates a product that can be spread on agricultural fields, improving soil health and supporting plant growth while sequestering carbon and generating carbon credits.

HEMPALTA, an agricultural technology company dedicated to harnessing the potential of industrial hemp, is launching production of biochar based on the plant.

biochar- based product that is being introduced to the market that is both consumer-friendly and environmentally beneficial,” said Darren Bondar, President and CEO of HEMPALTA.

The new product, “ Biochar ,” made by processing hemp biomass processed at the company’s facility or in farmers’ fields, is produced through a process called pyrolysis, which heats the organic material at high temperatures with extremely low oxygen levels. The method captures the carbon and creates a product that can be spread on agricultural fields, improving soil health and supporting plant growth while sequestering carbon and generating carbon credits.

Biochar represents a promising opportunity for farmers, allowing them to convert hemp and other plant waste into a valuable commodity that can generate income through carbon credits, which for high-quality biochar typically sell for $200 per ton of CO2 captured.

Among other things, the company is developing a global platform that can use the high carbon sequestration aspect of the hemp plant to help farmers monetize carbon removal credits from industrial hemp in the voluntary carbon market. Mr. Bondar notes that “industrial hemp has the highest carbon sequestration potential of any crop, but in the past, hemp producers have not been able to accurately measure or verify these estimates,” a problem his company is developing. Addressing this issue will create another revenue stream for the modern hemp industry.

HEMPALTA operates a hemp processing plant at its Calgary facility. The company’s products include animal bedding, composting toilet litter, garden mulch, and hurds for hempcrete production. In May 2024, HEMPALTA acquired a controlling 50.1% stake in Hemp Carbon Standard Inc. , a company that has developed a program that calculates the amount of carbon removed from industrial hemp crops.
